Clark Montgomery back in the winner's circle

Clark and Loughan Glen had a fabulous run while based in the UK in 2015, including a win at Blenheim

The USA’s Clark Montgomery and his Irish Sport Horse Loughan Glen have won the Pine Top CIC3* at their first international outing since the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Clark showed that he meant business from the start with a score of 32.30 having him firmly in the lead after the dressage phase. They added just one show jumping rail to their penalties to finish on 36.3, ahead of Doug Payne and Vandiver in second place on 49.60

On his blog Clark admits that the Olympic experience in Rio had been a disappointing one for them but that Loughan Glen had recovered well from a bone chip in the knee and seems ‘as good as new’

Although this was their first international eventing start, the pair recently also won the Intermediate at the Ocala Winter II Horse Trials so they seem to be on form back in their home country despite not having been named on any of the recent USA squads

Liz Halliday-Sharp, who spends the English winter in her home country, also had a good weekend. Liz took first and second places in the CIC2* on Deniro Z and Elarona, sixth in the CIC3* on Fernhill By Night and third in the CIC1* on MSH Cooley Twilight
