While a few of Shelford Manor’s regular riders, including locally based World Number Two eventer Ros Canter, are a little further north this weekend at the Defender Blair Castle International Horse Trials, there will be plenty of chances to watch other top riders at the Agria Lifetime Shelford Manor (2) Horse Trials in Nottinghamshire.
Bubby Upton, who continued her remarkable comeback from injury at Hartpury International by taking first and second place in the CCI4*-S there, has two horses at Shelford – Shannondale Bertie in the Open Novice Section D and the six-year-old Hestyle Van Beek Z in the Novice Section A.
Willa Newton, Andrew James and Emilie Chandler are other well-known riders competing in the Novice sections but these well-known names will be ineligible for points in the Arena Saddles Novice League, open to registered members of British Eventing who have not competed at Advanced or CCI3* level in the previous five years.
However, the ones to keep an eye on this weekend in the Novice classes will be Vicky Hind riding Blueford Galaxy (Novice Section A) and Amy Ward riding Peppershake Z (Novice Section C) who are currently in first and second place on the Arena Saddles Novice League leaderboard, with just Shelford Manor (2) and Sapey events to go before the final at Osberton International (2) from 2nd – 6th October.
The Novice classes will run on Saturday, with GO BE 100, 90 and 80 classes on Sunday and more BE100 and BE90 classes. Originally there was to be a third day of competition on Monday 26th but in its place, there will now be flagged cross country schooling (£30 per horse and no need to book).
