The New Zealand young riders totally dominated in today’s (Saturday) cross country phase soaring to an impressive lead in the Young Rider Trans-Tasman Challenge.
Held in conjunction with the Tavern Harewood CCI2* competition as part of the Eventing Canterbury South Island FEI Three Day Event at the National Equestrian Centre at McLeans Island, the Kiwis sit on 156.3 penalties going into the show jumping phase still with all four team members live. The Australian’s didn’t have the best day at the office slipping to 252.7 with only three team members after Ben Leahy and La Directeur were eliminated on the cross country.
Samantha Felton (Hamilton) aboard Ricker Ridge Pico Boo now lead the class after a stunning cross country round, clear and inside the time allowed.
Fellow Kiwi team member Joseph Waldron on Springvale All Black have moved up to sit second on 52.8 penalties, while local rider and trailblazer for the team Katie Rankin on Time To Tango Too hold third on 53.5, both going clear and inside the time.
Dressage leader Makayla Wood continued to spearhead the Aussie attack aboard the stylish 14-year-old thoroughbred gelding Just Corona to lie fourth on 66.3 after picking up an unlucky 20 faults for a run-out on the cross country.

Current Alltech Junior series leader Kate Mackie (Mosgiel) lies fifth with Kiwi team member Virginia Thompson (Auckland) on Ashbury Pee Cee rounding out the top six.
The two other Australian team members Juana Andreou on Sunvalley Donnerhe and Isabel English on Feldale Mouse both had one stop of the cross country and incurred time penalties.
New Zealand coach Tinks Pottinger was absolutely rapt with today’s results.
“I am absolutely over the moon with this group of riders. They have been great right from the start. I think all rode very well; they rode to plan but they also rode like top riders.”
She gave full credit to course designer Nick Pyke who had produced a true championship track.
“It was a course that had questions all over it, and the riders had to think and ride accordingly. They all stepped up. But it’s not over, until it’s over,” she cautioned. “We still have a trot-up in the morning before we move into the show jumping phase. I’m not pessimistic, but I am mindful of how the sport can go.”
Cust’s Brent Jury came through to take the lead on 62 penalties in the NZCT CIC3* with a clear cross country just incurring two time faults aboard SE Big. Ashburton’s Larissa Srhoy dropped back to second with Starburst on 87.8, with Charlotte Grayling (New Plymouth) third with NRM Ru Star on 98.4.
West Melton’s Emily Cammock leads the Sheds NZ CCI1* on Lewis, while Rangiora’s Ellie Braddock on Miss Matilda is currently the top-placed junior rider vying for the Lenamore Trophy for the National Junior Three Day Event Champion.
The South Island FEI Three Day Event is one of the nation’s prestigious equestrian events, and has attracted more than 190 competitors taking part in the event across all levels from CIC3* down to pre training level.
The competition concludes with the final show jumping phase tomorrow. Show jumping action gets underway at 9am, with the CCI2* (incorporating the Trans-Tasman) scheduled to start at 1pm.
