Larissa Srhoy and Rockquest (pictured here at Springbush) led the dressage but came to grief on the cross country
Christchurch PE teacher Kirsty Sharapoff has breezed to an easy win in the CNC2* at the Eventing Canterbury One Day Horse Trial at the NEC at McLeans Island.
Riding the nine-year-old former racehorse Shoot The Breeze, Sharapoff put in a strong dressage performance to lie second behind Larissa Srhoy (Loburn) and Rockquest. A faultless cross country round, picking up 13.6 cross country time penalties, and the class’s only clear in the showjumping saw them move into the lead on a total of 46 penalties, after Srhoy and Rockquest came to grief on the cross country resulting in the pair being eliminated and Srhoy being taken to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.
Sophie Abbott (Christchurch) moved up from fifth in the dressage to finish second on 49.1 penalties aboard the vastly experienced, Time To Tango Too, with Southland visitor Corey Wood (Wyndham) third with 61.7 on Pick Up Line. Young rider Jessie Fitzjohn, who was debut at 2* level, was fourth with What’s the Buzz.
On the whole Sharapoff was happy with their performance, despite having a stopwatch failure which contributed to her picking up a host of time faults. “We have been working on his dressage so was pleased with his test although it still needs more work. The cross country looked to be a nice inviting run with a couple of good questions for the first autumn event. He was a bit sticky at the start but improved as I rode more positively. I was really pleased with the showjumping.”
In the 11-strong CNC1* Sophie Griffith guided Noir et Blanc to a handsome win finishing on their dressage score of 36.6 penalties. Clean jumping also saw Todd Magner (Hokitika) move up the leaderboard to finish second on Kawhaka Concorde with teen Elizabeth Wylaars on Wairoa Ruby, third.
Competition was strong at the lower levels with classes split in the CNC105, CNC95 and CNC80 classes. Lindsay Cowell (Templeton) on Lladro Elite and Brydie Morgan (Lake Brunner) on Awatuna Velvet Rose took out the CNC105 divisions, while the CNC95 classes went the way of Carly Powell (Timaru) and Jo Hallenstein (Ashburton) on Twin Peaks Raki and Wallie respectively.
In the CNC80 divisions the honours went to Colleen Marrett (Temuka) on Attenborough and Katherine Hadler (Christchurch) on Hakuna Matata, with the popular inaugural CNC65 won by Emma Steel on Stanhopes Magician.
